Databricks offers the Unified Data Platform, a solution that helps customers solve their data engineering, advanced analytics and SQL analytics/data warehousing challenges in the cloud.

In doing so, Databricks supports all major cloud providers such as: Microsoft Azure, Amazon Webservices (AWS) and soon Google Cloud Platform (GCP). In addition, integration with other services of the respective cloud provider is currently best implemented in Microsoft's Azure, as Databricks is offered there as an Azure First Party Service.

Databricks was founded by the creators of Apache Spark and is still based on the open source variant of Spark. Databricks adds some useful, partly proprietary, features and optimizes Spark for use in the cloud environment.

Databricks itself is still active in the open source projects around Apache Spark and places most of the basic developments that provide the basis for its platform under open source license, thus making these projects freely accessible. With this approach, vendor lock-in should be actively avoided from the beginning, which becomes an important unique selling point of this product.
