In an age of visualization, cloud technology, DevOps and new applications that can be delivered within the shortest possible time in existing IT environments, a conventional approach typically leads to excessive costs and long provision times, while making it almost impossible to keep control of configurations management for all relevant system components.

Developed by Puppet Labs Inc., Puppet is a configuration solution that simplifies IT configurations management by using a declarative language and more abstract management of individual IT system components. Puppet makes it possible to break down a complex IT environment into individual blocks (Puppet resources), while describing the required system configuration for these blocks in a language that is easy for everyone to learn and read. Unlike an imperative approach using scripts or workflow tools, an IT administrator in Puppet no longer has to worry about the individual steps that are necessary for transferring the system components to the required state. By default, Puppet checks the system state every 30 minutes and transfers the system back to the required state if it has changed in the meantime. As a result, Puppet takes care of compliance requirements in an IT environment, reducing the scope of potential audits and the associated workload.

This abstract and declarative approach makes it possible to version all individual components in an IT environment (cloud environments, virtual machines, operating systems, middleware, network and storage components) in code management software (e.g., SVN, Git) as infrastructure as code and to automate them in a reusable manner.
